Are there specially designed tyres for electric vehicles?

In recent years, electric vehicles have taken the market by storm, and you may even be thinking about upgrading to an electric vehicle. However, if you are thinking about making the switch to electric, there are also some other parts of your vehicle that will need to be upgraded too.

Arguably the most important component of your vehicle that will need to be upgraded, are the tyres. Electric vehicles are always considerably heavier compared to their internal combustion counterparts due to their additional battery packs and their electric motors, putting a higher strain on their tyres.

Electric vehicles are also able to deliver peak torque immediately when accelerating. This delivery of torque from a standing start results in a much higher demand on the tyres compared to an internal combustion vehicle.

Due to this, tyre manufacturers have developed specialised tyres that are designed to cope with the extra strain placed on them by electric vehicles. It is important to ensure that you have the correct tyres fitted if you choose to upgrade to an electric vehicle, not only to maximise the life out of your tyres, but to increase the range of your car’s batteries and keep yourself and other road users safe when driving.
