Driving in a Bushfire Affected Area: Safety Precautions and Actions

Enjoying a summer road trip in Australia can be a wonderful experience, but it’s crucial to plan ahead and be prepared for potential encounters with bushfires while driving.

Prior Preparation for Bushfire Incidents

The most effective way to safeguard yourself and your family during bushfires is through proper preparation and avoidance of bushfire-affected areas whenever possible. The NSW Rural Fire Service highly recommends utilizing the “Fires Near Me” app. This app provides critical information, including fire locations, size, movement, and status of control across Australia.

Carrying a Fire Survival Kit

It’s essential to have a fire survival kit in your car. Even with preventive measures, unforeseen circumstances might lead you into a bushfire-affected area. Your fire survival kit should include ample drinking water, a battery-powered UHF radio, woollen blankets, and protective clothing.

Actions if Trapped by a Bushfire While Driving

In the event that you find yourself trapped by a bushfire while driving, follow these steps:

  1. Call Emergency Services: Dial 000 and inform them of your location immediately.
  2. Park Safely: Park your car away from the road and any surrounding grass or vegetation, if possible.
  3. Hazard Lights & Engine: Turn on your hazard lights and switch off the engine.
  4. Seal the Car: Ensure all windows and vents inside the car are fully closed.
  5. Use UHF Radio: If available, set your UHF radio to Channel 5 (frequency: 476.5250), an emergency channel in Australia. This can aid in contacting emergency services and others nearby.
  6. Seek Shelter: Cover yourself with a woollen blanket and continue drinking water.
  7. Stay Inside the Car: Remain inside your car until the sound of the fire has passed.
  8. Exit with Caution: After the fire noise diminishes, cautiously exit your car.

Safety Reminders

  • Stay Informed: Monitor updates from emergency services via the radio or other available sources.
  • Keep Calm: Remain calm and follow instructions from emergency services when communicating with them.

Remember, preparation, vigilance, and swift action can significantly improve your safety in a bushfire-affected area while driving.
